GAY MEAT
“LOVE FOR FUN”
“I wrote this song in 2017, before my life completely fell apart. I had met a man playing... umm... Pokemon Go hahaha, and we were sort of casually dating. It was really really fun, but it was doomed from the start because he was moving. I, of course, wanted to keep a good thing going, but he was almost twice my age, had so much more dating experience than me, and had his own idea of what *we* were. I was talking to my friend Zoe from Kississippi about our respective relationship woes at the time and she said something I will never forget: “I can’t tell if I’m actually in love with him, or if we’re just having fun?” and that was the AH-HAH moment that catalyzed me writing this song. I had a synth melody I knew I wanted to be the vocal melody, and a loop I had made in iDrum on my first gen iPad lol... and the last chorus needed to be this grand reveal–my own sort of BIG breakthrough moment. Alex had recorded all these yelling vocals at the end of the song that were sort of at the top of his range, and immediately I was like, “you sound like Jeff Rosenstock! Like, you’re doing an impression of Jeff. I wonder if they’d be down to sing on this?” and luckily they were!! I had just met Jeff touring with Chris Farren in 2024... Sweetest person working in music, and a hero!”

i used to think that nervous energy
was better than tough luck
or to face defeat
you know somethings
they’re always changing
corner of my room rearranging
and it never stops
cursed or blessed
what will all these memories be
cuz everything you say
oh it sounds so sweet
but it’s all rehearsed long before me
and what comes after this
us? anything?
and is that something i need?
summer into fall
now it’s wintertime
the snow on the ground
melts and it turns to ice
you know we could be something like that
an already cold heart
at once turns black
now there’s just no turning back
i know i said that i’d be fine
i know you’re seeing other guys
two weeks four months i’m finally done
confusing love for fun
